The third VideoSense Summer School

Following the previous successful series of VideoSense Summer School in Dublin (, and in Santorini, Greece (, the third VideoSense Summer School on Ethically-guided and Privacy-respecting Video Analytics has been organised in Sophia Antipolis, France. The Summer School took place on 16-17 April 2014 in Eurecom premises.

The goal of the Summer School was to bring together young researchers working in the field of privacy-respecting and ethnically-aware video analysis in security and offer them lectures delivered by experts from academy and industry providing a clear and in-depth summary of state-of-the-art research in the field. At the same time, the Summer School we provides an enjoyable and stimulating environment in which participants can benefit not only from the formal and practical sessions but also from informal and social interactions with established researchers and with the other participants. The invited speakers offered students interested in presentations covering a number of topics and areas including:

  • Social, legal and ethical issues and challenges in video surveillance
  • Privacy-guided video-analytics
  • Image and video analysis and retrieval
  • Pattern recognition, computer vision, and machine learning
  • Motion detection and object tracking
  • Event, situation, behaviour, threat modelling/simulation/recognition
  • Biometrics, face detection and recognition
  • Security and safety
  • Multimodal surveillance
  • Multi-camera surveillance

  • Andrei Costin (Eurecom) - Lecture on “On Cyber-Security of Video Surveillance Systems”
  • Mathias Bossuet (Thales) - Lecture on “Introduction to the PARIS project and to privacy-by-design applied to video-surveillance systems”
  • Dariusz Kloza (Vrije Universiteit Brussel) - Lecture on “And we know who you are, and we know where you live - Privacy, data protection and (video) surveillance”
